The truth about smart cities? ‘Will they destroy democracy in the end?’

The Guardian stated this in a review about smart cities in december of last year. In this article, the author Steven Poole is reserved about the way technology in cities is developing. The common fear that the author refers to, is that large compagnies are about to take over the city.

One of the quotes: “The notion of the smart city in its full contemporary form appears to have originated within these businesses,” Greenfield notes in his 2013 book Against the Smart City, “rather than with any party, group or individual recognised for their contributions to the theory or practice of urban planning.”

The common fear is that people just don’t care enough to make a difference. They will let the large compagnies go ahead  with their business… What do you think? Is Steven Poole right to focus and enlighten this fear about smarter cities?
